Friday July 20th...to the UP eh!

We got up "early" Friday morning and packed our swimsuits and a picnic to go up to Black River Harbor.  We stopped in Ironwood first so mom could go to the big annual sale at the quilt shop there.  It was crazy!  There were women lined up down the block, the store was full, the tents outside were full....crazy!  Then we met Matt and Amy and walked around downtown a bit.  We went to a camera/electronics shop that didn't sell anything digital.  The did have music cd's...all the latest hits and chart toppers......from 1997.  We ate lunch at a really interesting supper club.  The decor was fantastic.  In a weird way.  The bathrooms had signs in every stall that assured you that all the toilets did in fact flush, you just had to carefully follow the next 7 steps to accomplish it.  However the food was good, cheap and they were more than happy to accommodate all of our food restrictions.
From town we took a detour to Superior Falls.  There was a big group of  teenagers there on a kayak trip when we first got there.  It was a little humorous to watch their guides try to get them all back in their boats and out paddling again.
Alex enjoyed climbing around on the rocks.

It had gotten to be extremely hot and humid, especially for being on Lake Superior.  We drove to Black River Harbor but skipped hiking to all the waterfalls this time and went right to the beach.  It was really weird, the water was actually almost a normal temperature.  It was cold but not nearly as cold as Lake Superior usually is.  It didn't even make your feet numb and it was pretty easy to go all the way in and go under and actually swim.
We swam and picked up a bunch of rocks and played in the sand for a while and then made our way back to the picnic area for our dinner picnic.  After dinner we took the kids down to the little camp store to get a popsicle and watched some fishing boats come in.

Since we already had pictures from earlier in the week by the giant muskie, we thought why not the giant loon too?  Alex needed a bathroom anyway so we stopped in Mercer by the giant loon for a photo opp.

Back to the cabin in time for the sunset and a decent bedtime!
