Fisherman Alex

Alex has been practicing his casting and wow, has he gotten good! He caught a fish right off the bat sunday night and then got a ton of bites but didn't land anymore. He really seems to love fishing.
Sunday night was party night it seemed throughout the campground so none of us got very good sleep. Monday we headed out for home. We learned a valuable lesson that day....a long weekend is not enough time for the kids to be ready to get back in the car for that long. Maya was done being in the car well before we even got to the bridge.

Maya's "party"

We stopped on the way back to the campsite and got some cupcakes to have a little birthday party after supper for Maya since we were with family.

The kids at the next campsite over were very interested in our baby and then when the presents came out they wanted to stay for sure. So you will notice some extra kids in the pictures.

Maya liked the presents, Alex liked unwrapping them for her. But she had no interest at all in her cupcake. She looked at it and then crawled away to have daddy read her new book to her. Her favorite thing actually was the shiny Care Bear birthday card!

Sunday

Sunday we ventured up the Keweenaw. Alex wanted to see waterfalls and Ben wanted to stop at the Dredge. So we stopped at the Dredge first and I stayed at the car with Maya so she could sleep and Alex and Ben went down to the Dredge. Alex thought it was very cool but wasn't too keen about actually climbing inside it.

Next we headed down the road to Hungarian falls.

We kept heading north to Eagle River. There isn't very much water in those falls right now.

Everyone was getting hungry so we looked for a picnic area between Eagle River and Eagle Harbor. Unfortunately the one I was thinking of only has one picnic table this year and it was in use when we drove by. But my parents found a nice little spot at the marina in Eagle Harboar across from the lighthouse.

After lunch we parted ways. My parents and Matt and Amy continued north to Brockway Mountain and Copper Harbor. Copper Harbor was having the annual Fat Tire Festival mountain bike race that day.

We headed a bit south to go to the beach because it was a hot gorgeous day. We stopped at Great Sand Bay and Ben stayed in the car with Maya while she slept and Alex and I played on the beach.

Saturday

We headed to Houghton mid-morning and walked around campus at MTU. Alex seemed to like seeing where daddy went to school. We went to the Seaman Mineral Museum - Ben use to take Alex there all the time when he was a baby. Apparently that early exposure really helps to develop the nerd genes because Alex was SO excited there. He kept running around saying "Daddy! Look at this mineral!"

We had lunch at the Ambassador (no fishbowls this time though...a bit early in the day for that ~ but they do have KBC on tap now and we did partake in that!)

On the way back to the campsite we drove over the lift bridge for Alex and up one of the steepest streets in Hancock then back around through Houghton and went to show Alex the apartment he lived in before we moved to TC.

The apartments look the same, looks like they are full for this semester and like usual during move-in time the dumpsters were overflowing. But I doubt they are having any bear trouble this year because the lot right next to the dumpsters and all back into the woods where we use to hike and snowshoe is being logged this year. I'm SO glad they didn't do that while we lived there. Part of the way we endured living in such a tiny apartment was that we "lived" in the yard and woods all around us.

It had gotten hot and was just a really beautiful evening so we hit the campsite quick to pack some snacks and towels and went to the beach at Misery Bay.

It was a really fun evening!

Rain?

Friday night we went to bed with a sky full of stars and woke up a few hours later to a pounding rain! And it was COLD. In the morning the lake was gorgeous though with the mist and how calm it was.
