Flashlights and cookies

Really, what more could a boy ask for? That's what the children's activity at church last week involved. Alex was in heaven.

They took flash lights and went on a "Jesus hunt" throughout the whole church building and then decorated whole wide world cookies.

Traverse City North Stars

Friday night Ben took Alex to a hockey game with Alex's friend Lily and her dad. We have a local Jr - A team (similar to the Green Bay Gamblers) and the rink isn't far from our house.
Unfortunately Alex and Lily refused to get their picture taken together. Also unfortunately both dads ended up taking the kids home early because when the North Stars scored a goal they had an extremely loud, I mean extremely loud, whistle/siren noise that had just about every kid in the building in tears.
Alex said he loved the skating part.....but not the noise.

On a side note

Alex's blood test results all came back normal! Good news. So if he goes until the end of April without another bleeding episode we are not doing the colonoscopy. I personally have a gut feeling that whatever was causing it, wether a polyp or something else, was flushed out during the whole ordeal of the barium enima test.

Cool project

There is a program thru our school system called Way to Grow that has playgroups, open gyms and also monthly home visits for pre-school age kids. The teacher comes over and does a project with Alex, usually reads a book too. This month they decorated these paper eggs with homemade puffy paint. The "paint" is just shaving cream and glue mixed together and colored with food coloring! Pretty cool, eh? Then you can stick whatever decoration in it and let it all dry overnight and it sticks there.
The yellow one he made for me....because I love yellow. Well, according to Alex I love yellow anyway. You see he has assigned us all our favorite colors. His favorite it orange, Daddy's is blue and mine is yellow. No arguing allowed.

Learning at the Dennos Museum

Today was about the art of the Woodland Indians.....it was kind of a rough one today, it didn't hold the kids attention very well in the beginning. But the story was good and the art project was great.

Sledding

Some friends of ours have an awesome sledding hill at their house. Sunday afternoon we went over to check it out! There is a kid run and a "grown up" run. We had a great time!

More fun outside

We finally had a weekend with great playing outside weather! Saturday we played in the yard and went for a short snowshoe.

Summing up age 3............

Yesterday we went to Grand Rapids

Background:
In December and January Alex had some episodes of rectal bleeding. Enough that it was a little scary and after the first time I took him to our family doctor. All the information they looked up pointed to a rectal polyp being the culprit since he had no other symptoms. We decided to take a wait and see approach since the next step would be a barium enima/air contrast x-ray test.
After the second bout in January we went ahead and did the x-ray test. 24 hours of clear liquids, castor oil prep, then a barium enima during the test......not fun. However the radiologist found a suspicious spot that could be a polyp. Or could be residual stool. No way to know by that test.
On to the next step which was seeing a Pediatric Gastroenterologist at the Children's hospital in Grand Rapids (2 hours south of us).

Yesterday:
We saw the specialist. She reviewed his records and agreed that a polyp was the most likely cause. There are a few other slight possibilities that are not likely in his case due to lack of other symptoms - both are inflammatory conditions - and she ordered a couple blood tests to rule that out.
Polyps in children are usually a one time thing she said, not like in adults where once you get some removed you have to keep getting checked over and over. She has never in all her years of practice seen one that was malignant, they are almost always benign.
Alex has not had another bleeding episode since the beginning of January. She said that doesn't mean there isn't a polyp there, they bleed intermittantley, but it could mean that it came loose and he passed it on his own. Or there may not even have been one there ever and the bleeding was caused by something else. Nice and definitive, eh?
She checked a small stool sample yesterday for occult blood (blood you cannot see with your naked eye) and it was negative. She ordered a blood count to make sure he isn't anemic and that would indicate he has been bleeding small amounts continuously that we can't see.
The next step is a colonoscopy. 36 hour clear liquid diet, plus the prep, plus getting put under for the procedure. Big deal. We have one scheduled for May.
IF any of the labs come back abnormal or he has another bleeding episode before May then we will go down and do the test.
IF he continues to be normal, the labs are normal....then we'll have to decide if we want to put him through that. Right now we are leaning towards no. She said to decide the week before.

Alex did an awesome job with the exam and getting blood drawn. It was a long tiring day for all of us.

Little Ninja

Tuesday afternoon Alex started Tae Kwon Do class. It's a program for 3-4 year olds called "Little Ninjas". He's very excited about his "minja class" and has gotten over the fact that it has nothing to do with pie making - like in the Backyardigans episode "Samuri Pie".
