Miss Maya.........

The upper GI test today was awful. I was told to arrive at 8:30am for our 9am procedure and remember Maya couldn't eat for 3 hours.....I lodged a complaint regarding this because it took us literally minutes to check in (we were pre-registered) and the I paced a busy waiting room w/ a screaming baby for 20 minutes.
I was not given the option to try and feed her the barium at all, I had talked to a friend in another state over the weekend whose 6 week old had this procedure done and she had made me feel so much better about that part....... but aparently they do it differently here . After she was strapped to a board to keep her still for the x-rays they took a syringe filled w/ the barium w/ some tubing coming off of it and a nipple on the end of the tubing and put the nipple in her mouth and taped it there. When she didn't suck and swallow right away they simply pushed the barium into her mouth w/ the syringe while she coughed and choked until she swallowed some. I'm still deciding if I should complain about that part and who I should complain to.
I don't know the full results yet. I left there confused because the doctor administering the test kept talking to me about reflux but never came out and said "this shows some reflux".
I DO know that all the major structural stuff looked good. There were no blockages or structural abnormalities.

Happy Birthday to me?

Please keep us in your thought on monday. I get to spend the morning of my birthday taking Maya to the hospital to have an upper GI test done. She has been having some stomach issues that make her an unhappy girl. The doctor wants to rule out acid reflux. I'm not allowed to nurse her for 3 hours before the test and then have to make her drink contrast dye when we get there. I'm nervous about how that is going to go since she has never had a bottle or pacifier.

Finger painting?

I think Alex was thinking more along the lines of arm painting.

Summer in October

We did some hanging out outside this weekend......not exactley what you'd expect for October in Michigan. It was 88 and humid both saturday and sunday so it was a lot more fun outside in the evening...you know when it was only 80 or so outside.

The Nieto girls together at last

Joe and Mary and Kyra came to visit this weekend! Kyra has gotten so big and is just a doll. What a fun little girl.

Ahoy! Me hardies!

Introducing "Captain Sword". Alex says that is his pirate name. Grandma is making his costume and this weekend we found his accessories. He is very excited to say the least. Only problem is that he says he needs "pirate boots". Not sure how we're going to do that yet. And he asks every day if it is Halloween yet and if it's time to go trick or treating. This from the boy who absolutely refused to dress up last year.

The 1 month weight check

Birth
Weight 8 lbs. 10 oz
Height 19 inches
Head 13.5 cm

1 Month
Weight 10 lbs. 4 oz.
Height 21 inches
Head 15 cm

I guess she is getting plenty to eat!
I was not ever able to breastfeed Alex - he didn't know how to suck when he was born and by the time we got that sorted out I couldn't salvage any sort of milk supply, it was a huge disappointment to me and it was very important to me to do everything we could to make it work this time especially since here we had many more resources and support systems than we did in Houghton.
It is absolutely amazing to me every day how our bodies are created to work and that I can supply all the food that Maya needs. I am very thankful to be able to do this for her.

What a beautiful day to be 1 month old!

This afternoon was the perfect day. It was in the mid 70's, sunny with a little breeze.....so we headed outside after lunch and didn't come in until supper time. Some friends stopped by to play for a little while. Maya took a little snooze on the lawn chair. Alex went for a bike ride while we walked along for a while.
It was a perfect day to be 1 month old!

Open Barn day

Saturday was "Open Barn" day at Shetler Dairy farm. We had gone last year and Alex loved it so we made sure to go this year too.
We saw tons of friends there and the kids all had a blast. Well almost all the kids, Maya was so impressed that she slept the entire time except for waking up twice to nurse.
